proxychains and safe browsing

I was watching How to be Invisible Online and in the video occupytheweb demonstrated how to browse a little more anonymously. Aside from using a browser like Brave that does not constantly send information about your browsing habits back “home”.

occupytheweb demonstrated how to configure proxychains to use multiple proxies including the tor network. Here is a cool little article that highlights this method.

What is proxychains?

proxychains – a tool that forces any TCP connection made by any given application to follow through proxy like TOR or any other SOCKS4, SOCKS5 or HTTP(S) proxy. Supported auth-types: “user/pass” for SOCKS4/5, “basic” for HTTP.

occupytheweb suggests that using Kali and anonsurf is pretty good for staying anonymous. I suggest watching the video if you are interested. One huge tip, your phone is way less anonymous than your computer. The section about phones sounded a lot like the episode of Darknet Diaries on the same topic. All so very interesting.

I like the idea of being anonymous, but the reality is that I don’t have a need to be. It’s not worth all the effort. In the end anonymity is a myth. I don’t want Google making money off my habits, so I’ll use Brave instead of Chrome, but cookies, browsers, “whoever controls the final hop on the network, controls the traffic”, geolocation, etc. It’s easier to just go about life. Like I said, I have nothing to hide and I don’t pretend that there is a way for me to stay anonymous, but I’ll do what I can within reason.
