The first steps in the dance of learning a new device is usually, updating the firmware.

The timing for updating the firmware is really good, version 2.1.0 was released last week and there is already a video on what’s included in that video, as well as where in the repo to find the update files for an SD card. I tried using the HackRF Installer App -which is a website, much like the one you can use for the Flipper Zero, but it would not work. I tried Windows, Mac and Linux – the only thing that worked for me was using the SD card and flashing the update.
You can see the updated version here:

I’ve been watching video and learning what the HackRF One can do. The portapack is amazing and so far, it’s been a lot of fun to use and learn. I have been studying to get a HAM radio license and some of what I have learned about RF in those classes overlaps a little.
One thing is sure, this device is capable and powerful. I am not doing anything with transmitting until I have a very solid understanding of what I am doing, it’s just too easy to make an illegal mistake.
I look forward to posting about this device more in the future.
Oh, one other thing I tried was using the HackRF One with my laptop, which is how you would typically use it without a portapack. It works in Window great, I am not trying on my Macs because they are work computers, but it does also work with Linux.
