I am finding this course, Practical Ethical Hacking from TCM, to be one of the best I have tried to date. The instructor, the CyberMentor, is a great teacher. His video on subnetting finally hit home for me.
A lot of it so far has been revisiting things I have learned elsewhere and used at THM and HTB, but in a way it’s like learning something new. No one has ever talked about this stuff, like enumeration, taking notes for a report, and exploitation, with so much practical wisdom. The amount of insight and “real world” that I am getting far exceeds the cost of the subscription price. I am so thankful to have found this, especially after trying the eJPT track and how horrible that was.
The instructor makes all the difference. I did email INE about the instructor and how horrible it was to try and learn from him, but never heard back. It looks like they got rid of him and redid the track with a new instructor, which is great. I just googled to see if the reason they swapped out the previous instructor was because they got enough complaints, looks like that might be the case.
I love this course so much, and the instructor, and I believe in how practical this stuff is going to prove to be that I changed my plans a bit. I was going to follow this path.
PEH Course -> HTB Academy Pentester Track -> 50 CTFs at HTB - OSCP Exam
Now I want to tackle the PJPT and the PNPT for the simple fact that it’s practical. Like their site says.
Practical Network Penetration Tester Exam Format
Like all TCM Security certifications, the PNPT exam was designed to teach students how to apply their skills in a real-world situation. This is not a CTF. Our exams provide an experience that is similar to what you will be asked to do in a professional environment.
- Absolutely ZERO flags to capture.
- NO multiple choice questions.
The modified path is going to take longer, but that’s fine. I am in no rush. This is all for growth as a hacker. It takes as long as it takes.
PEH Course -> PJPT -> Advanced TCM courses -> PNPT -> HTB Pentester Track -> 50 CTF at HTB -> OSCP Exam
Notes
One of the great things I am doing in this class is note taking. The instructor went over good note taking, a skill I already have of course, but again, the angle that he takes with notes and the little bits of industry insight he gives – modified my behavior a bit. I am taking better notes, especially with the tools he suggested for screenshots and not taking. I am using these at work now too, and I love it.
I’ll try to be consistent in reporting back with how the course is going. I have completed 33% of the course so far, over the past several weeks. I don’t have a lot of time to give to this learning, but I do what I can.
